ABOUT THE DUTCH CULTURAL AND ACADEMIC CENTRE

We believe that the relations between The Netherlands and Romania can be strengthened through a cultural and academic channel of communication, represented by the Dutch Cultural and Academic Centre.

Promote Dutch culture

To advance and promote Dutch culture in Cluj-Napoca and, for that matter, throughout entire Transylvania and Romania

Stronger ties

To build stronger ties in the fields of culture and research between Cluj-Napoca and the Netherlands and to serve as a bridge between Dutch universities and the academic world in Romania.

Cooperation opportunities

To create cooperation opportunities on a variety of academic and cultural projects between Romania, more specifically Cluj-Napoca, and the Netherlands

Cultural activities

To serve as a gateway for Dutch students and researchers to Romanian academia by providing a diversified program of conferences, lectures and cultural activities

PURPOSE

For quite a number of years now, the Netherlands has been the biggest foreign investor in Romania, representing almost 20% of the total foreign investments in the country. According to the Netherlands-Romanian Chamber of Commerce, in 2013 there were more than 4000 Dutch companies registered in Romania.

In addition, almost 100 Dutch NGO’s have been registered in Romania, most of which are located in Transylvania.

Moreover, universities from all around the Netherlands have become a very attractive academic destination for Romanian students, who choose Holland to pursue either their graduate and/or their post-graduate studies. Apart from this, the sensitive issues that have been brought to public debate in Romania (mostly at the initiative of representatives of The Netherlands), e.g. the issue of corruption, accession of Romania to the Schengen Area etc., have shown that political, academic and diplomatic ties between Romania and the Netherlands have become more important over time.

In spite of all this, and despite the fact that both The Netherlands and Romania are members of the European Union, there are only few cultural and academic bridges between the two countries.

Over the years, Cluj-Napoca has proven to be one of the main communication channels between The Netherlands and Romania, the city serving as headquarters for both the Dutch Consulate and the Dutch Business club. We therefore believe that the relations between The Netherlands and Romania can be strengthened if we add a cultural and academic dimension to it, alongside the already existing diplomatic and business ones.

The Dutch Cultural and Academic Centre in Cluj-Napoca aims at representing the cultural dimension.
